Our Beach Trip

We went to the beach today, the 21st June. It was a gorgeous day with the sun splitting the stones. It got a little chilly when a big mist cloud came in from the sea. We went on a scavenger hunt and had to find various beach things. We found seaweed, shells, crabs craws, feathers, smooth stones and lots more. Then we had a sandcastle competition. The castles were excellent and Ms Church picked them all as winners!! Then we had our lunch and played football and rolled down some hills. It was a really good day.

Our Visit to Swords Castle

We went to Swords Castle on Wednesday 16th June. Lots of parents came and drove us all to Swords. It was a really sunny day so we were very lucky. Our tour guide was named Helen and she told us all about the castle and showed us the restored chapel and tower. We all got to walk along the battlements and even saw a real dungeon!! We had a pop quiz when we got back to class and we learned quite a lot. It was great to step back into History.

Dancing!!

Robert's Mum was in our class helping for the week and she is an excellent dance teacher, so she did some hip hop dancing with us. It was good fun. The boys really enjoyed the Superman dance.

Our Trip To Malahide Castle

We went to Malahide Castle on Wednesday with our buddies from Ms Halpin's class and the sun was shining in the sky. We had a look around the castle grounds and talked about the Talbot family. We saw the old church and the graveyard and where the old curtain wall used to be. We had a picnic beside the castle in the sunshine and then played football, rounders and a few girls rolled down the hill.

OUR SCHOOL TOUR

We went to Newgrange farm today, Thursday 27th May 2010, on our first class school tour. Everyone was sooooooooo excited on the bus on the way! When we got there we went into a huge hay shed where we held lots of baby animals like chicks, kittens, puppies and rabbits.

It was really cool to hold all the cute little animals. They were so soft and tiny.

After petting the animals we visited a few adult animals too. We saw a horse that is 27 years old!! We saw cows and calves, pigs and piglets, goats and kids, sheep and lambs.

We even saw rabbits and a brand new baby rabbit who had no fur at all!

Next we went on a tractor trailer ride. It was the best!!! The man made us all help to push the tractor up the hill and then he told us we were going down a steep hill....everyone got a fright, but luckily he was only joking!!! We drove past lots more animals; sheep, cows, we even got to see a big brown bull, like the Brown Bull of Cooley. We got to see Newgrange the megalithic tomb. And we got to see a fairy ring and a tiny fairy fort. It was such good fun!

When we came back to the farm we got to feed lambs which was really good fun. We also got to feed goats, geese, hens and really fluffly hens called Silkie Hens.

Before lunch we got to play in the playground with giant tubes and in the sand pit. After that we all got a go of playing on mini tractors and trailers. We laughed so much that we ALMOST forgot about lunch. Then we played chasing in the Hay Maze!!

After our lunch at the picnic tables we all got a go of milking Daisy the very 'still' cow. She never moved an inch!!!! We all had such a super day and we will always remember it.

Volcano Experiments!!!

We learned all about volcanoes in school and it was very interesting. We saw pictures of the Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano that is causing all the problems due to volcanic ash. We also looked at how volcanoes are formed and all their different parts, like the magma chamber, the vent and the lava. At the end we all made mini volcanoes with clay and small bottles. We added vinegar to bread soda and got a fizzy reaction that looked like a volcano erupting. It was very exciting and the whole class enjoyed the day.

Orienteering for Active Week

We also had some outdoor activity taking part in photo-star orienteering. We had to look for places around the school that matched photographs. It was really good and kept us very active!

Skipping To Get Active!

Another way we tried to get active was to have a skipping session. Some people in our class were not sure if they could skip, so we had mini lessons where we watched a few pros at work. Some children could skip twisting the rope, some could skip on one leg and some could even skip backwards. It was great fun to skip all around the yard.

Active Week 2010

We all participated in Active Week last week 4th -7th May 2010. As a whole school project we trie to run around the equator, well as close to it as possible. Our class ran every day. We were lucky to have nice weather. It was a good way to get active.

Diorama Drama!

We all learned about dioramas and how they are like mini stages that show either a scene from your favourite story, a scene from nature or your imagination. We thought about it all week and brought in any bits and bobs we wanted to add into our shoe boxes. Sand and seaweed were brought in for a beach scene. Sparkles and little characters were brought in for disco scenes. Planets and glow in the dark stars were added to space scenes - even a mini astronaut flew through one space scene! There were prehistoric scenes, forest scenes, underwater scenes and lots more to spark the imagination. We even had a small exhibition so that another first class could come to visit us and view our work. It was exciting.

Fruity Friday - Al Fresco!

We all got to taste scrumptious summer fruits like strawberries, pineapple, mango, raspberries and blackberries. They were all yummy! We were even lucky enough to go outside and enjoy the fruit on picnic blankets. When we went back inside we talked about our favourite fruits and we did some activities.

Oliver Day!

We all dressed up for Oliver day. Some boys dressed up as Oliver and Fagin and the Artful Dodger. Some of the girls dressed up as Nancy. We watched the original film of Oliver Twist. It was a fun day!

Mother's Day art & craft

We were very busy making special clay pots along with colourful cards to brighten up Mother's day for all our super mummys! Happy Mother's Day from Room 1 !

Cup Day!

Today is Tuesday the 2nd March and our school was extremely lucky today!!
We were visited by last years All Ireland winning captains, Darren O' Sullivan and Michael Fennelly and every class got to get their photograph taken with the Sam Maguire Cup and the Liam McCarthy Cup. Here is a photo of our class enjoying the cups and the sunshine.

Friendship Week & Intercultural Week

Monday 22nd February was the start to a busy week. It was our second Friendship Week where we worked on lessons that reminded us of the great friends we have in our class. We made up acrostic poems with the word FRIEND and we looked at a lovely poem called 'Us' which linked friendship and the world around us. We passed compliments in class which always makes everyone feel good. For art we did a chalk portrait of our friend and hung them up around the room to make it more colourful.

It was also Intercultural Week where we celebrated the variety of cultures that we are lucky to have in our school. Some children came around with tasty food from different countries which we got to taste. Aga is in our class and she comes from Poland. We learned how to say hello in Polish ~ Dzien Dobry. We also looked at a poem called 'A Box of Crayons' which made us think about how important it is for us to have different colours and differences in our world, otherwise it would look a little dull and boring. We made a giant box of crayons and we all coloured in our favourite colour crayon and put it in the box. It was fun.

We had fun weaving coloured wool in and out of netting in the shape of a heart. They looked nice and colourful.

Library Week winners!! Three Cheers!!!

These are our three winners for our Library Week competition. They all did very interesting projects on their favourite animals and the work was presented very well. We all learned lots about elephants, monkeys and horses. Well Done!!

Our Animal Projects

Everyone in our class worked on a project. It was the first project we did. We chose our favourite animal and researched all about it on the internet and in books. We could make a book or display our work on big coloured pages. They all look great and we learned lots from one another!! We are all very proud of our work. Everyone got a treat as a reward for all their hard work.

Bingo is Fun !

This month we have started learning about Tens and Units. We are also doing lots of hundred square work. Playing BINGO is a fun way to get used to the numbers on the hundred square.

FRUITY FRIDAY!!

Last Friday, 29-01-10, We had our second Fruity Friday! We are lucky enough to have a great group of parents that organise the whole event, from preparing the fruit to making the worksheets! A big thank you to all of those parents.

We even got to taste a smoothie and we had to guess what the ingredients were! We had such a great morning. I definitely think apples are the big fruit favourite.

Science Day Jan 2010

All the first classes had a Science Day on Wednesday. We explored and investigated magnets, air, water and forces. Each class got to move around the different class rooms observing different games and experiments. It was a really fun day!!

Our Halloween Fancy Dress Party

Everyone in our class dressed up for our Halloween party. Even the teachers dressed up!! We had a great day. We played games and we shared our sweets and party goodies.
